上面报道中的reserve astronaut就是航天员候选人，reserve在这儿意为储备的、备用的，比如：a reserve supply of food（食物供给储备）。Reserve在金融术语中表示储备金，如forex reserve pool（外汇储备库）；这个词用在足球比赛中还可表示替补的，如reserve player（替补队员）。

选拔航天员候选人十分严格，有body odor（体臭）、bad breath（口臭）、chronic sore throats（慢性咽炎）、ringworm（癣）, cavities（蛀牙）等普通疾病的都算不合格。另外，航天员候选人的家人也得出示证明其无contagious disease（传染病）的clean bill of health（健康证明）。
