on account of为复合介词，等于because of，后接名词、动名词或动名词复合结构作介词宾语。语法规则是：除去介词in和but, 介词后不可接that从句。但在美国英语非正式语体中，on account of被当作连词用，后接从句。本句就是这种美式英语的非正式使用方法。大家可以根据because来理解on account of. 但自己在写作中不适合模仿这种使用方法。
需要说明的是，这个句子中的on account of引导的从句并非修饰性状语（adjunct），而是评注性状语（disjunct)。是说话人对自己句子的注解、说明。主句的过去进行时是不久前的事件（譬如昨天晚上）。说话人目前说当时（昨晚）自己坐在那里懊恼自己一个字也写不出来（wish表示与事实相反或不可能达成的愿望）。然后作者对我们的句子作注解、说明（disjunct)，讲解为何会期望不可能发生的事情发生：其实已经构思好了一个自觉得很好的特务故事。在做注解、说明的时候，说话人是以目前为着眼点的（目前和昨晚时间非常接近），所以从句用目前完成时have thought up和I think is.
